LaTeX Equation Editor for Markdown
Type LaTeX and watch the equation render, then copy it as Markdown math for GitHub, Obsidian, Notion, Jupyter and more — inline $…$ or display $$…$$.
Free, no signup — 229 symbols, and ChatGPT’s \[ \] math fixed in one paste.
Markdown for
$$
x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}
$$Inline $…$ (or $`…`$ when the expression contains Markdown characters); display $$…$$ on its own lines or a ```math block. GitHub docs
How to write an equation
- Type the LaTeX — Write the equation without delimiters, or paste one with $$…$$ or \[…\] and the delimiters come off. Click any of the symbols in the palette to insert it.
- Watch the preview — KaTeX renders it as you type. Problems — an unclosed brace, \left without \right, a command KaTeX does not know — are listed under the editor.
- Choose inline or display — Display math gets its own centred line; inline math sits inside a sentence and uses smaller limits and fractions.
- Copy for your app — Pick the tab for GitHub, Obsidian, Notion, Jupyter or another app and click Copy: the delimiters are the ones that app expects.
Math syntax by app
The same LaTeX, wrapped the way each app expects. These are exactly what the tabs above write for x^2.
| App | Inline | Display | Renderer |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub | $x^2$ | $$ ⏎ x^2 ⏎ $$ | MathJax |
| GitLab | $`x^2`$ | ```math ⏎ x^2 ⏎ ``` | KaTeX |
| Obsidian | $x^2$ | $$ ⏎ x^2 ⏎ $$ | MathJax |
| Notion | $$x^2$$ | $$ ⏎ x^2 ⏎ $$ | KaTeX |
| Jupyter | $x^2$ | $$ ⏎ x^2 ⏎ $$ | MathJax |
| Typora | $x^2$ | $$ ⏎ x^2 ⏎ $$ | MathJax |
| VS Code | $x^2$ | $$ ⏎ x^2 ⏎ $$ | KaTeX |
| LaTeX / MathJax \( \) | \(x^2\) | \[ ⏎ x^2 ⏎ \] | MathJax |
| Discord (no math) | `x^2` | ```latex ⏎ x^2 ⏎ ``` | None (shown as code) |
Fixing math pasted from ChatGPT
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini write equations with \( … \) and \[ … \]. That is correct LaTeX, but GitHub, Obsidian and most Markdown apps only look for dollar signs, so the math shows up as backslashes and brackets. Convert document mode rewrites the delimiters and nothing else:
The area is \( A = \pi r^2 \), and the circumference is
\[
C = 2\pi r
\]becomes, for GitHub:
The area is $A = \pi r^2$, and the circumference is
$$
C = 2\pi r
$$Math inside a sentence stays inline, a display equation on its own lines becomes a $$ block, and code blocks are left alone, so a $ in a shell script is not mistaken for math. To turn the whole answer into a document, the ChatGPT to PDF converter renders the same math.
Common LaTeX errors and what to write instead
An unclosed brace
Every { needs its }: \frac{a}{b stops the whole equation from rendering. The editor points at the brace that is never closed. A literal brace is \{.
\left without \right
Auto-sized brackets come in pairs. When you only want one, close with an invisible \right.
align in inline math
align, gather and equation only work in display math. Inline, use aligned — or switch to Display.
Commands KaTeX does not have
\label, \eqref, \mbox and siunitx’s \SI are LaTeX, not KaTeX. Use \tag, \text and 3\,\mathrm{m/s}. GitHub, Obsidian and Jupyter use MathJax, which knows more, so there these are warnings rather than errors.
KaTeX and MathJax
The preview uses KaTeX, the renderer behind GitLab, Notion and VS Code. GitHub, Obsidian, Jupyter and Typora use MathJax, which supports a few more commands — so when you copy for one of those, a command KaTeX lacks is flagged as a warning instead of an error.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I write math in Markdown?
Wrap LaTeX in dollar signs: $E = mc^2$ for math inside a sentence, and $$ on lines of their own for an equation on its own line. Markdown itself has no math syntax; GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, Notion, Jupyter, Typora and VS Code each add it, with small differences in the delimiters, which is what the tabs here take care of.
Does GitHub Markdown support LaTeX math?
Yes. GitHub renders $…$ inline and $$…$$ or a ```math code block as display math in READMEs, issues, pull requests, discussions and wikis, using MathJax. When an inline expression contains Markdown characters such as \, or *, the GitHub tab writes it as $`…`$ so Markdown cannot eat them.
Why doesn’t the math from ChatGPT render?
ChatGPT writes LaTeX with \( … \) and \[ … \], the delimiters of LaTeX documents. GitHub, Obsidian and most Markdown apps expect dollar signs, so they show the backslashes as text. Switch to Convert document, paste the answer, and copy it back with $ and $$ — the LaTeX and the rest of the text are left exactly as they were.
What is the difference between inline and display math?
Inline math ($…$) sits inside a line of text, so sums and fractions are drawn small to keep the line height. Display math ($$…$$) gets its own centred line at full size. Multi-line environments such as align only work in display math.
How do I write math in Obsidian?
Obsidian uses $…$ for inline math and $$…$$ for blocks, rendered with MathJax. Choose the Obsidian tab and copy; Obsidian also accepts the aligned, cases and matrix environments in the palette.
How do I add an equation in Notion?
In Notion, typing $$…$$ inside a line makes an inline equation, and a block equation is $$ on its own lines (or the /math command). The Notion tab writes those forms; Notion renders them with KaTeX, which this preview uses too.
Does this work for Jupyter notebooks?
Yes. Jupyter Markdown cells render $…$ and $$…$$ with MathJax. Copy from the Jupyter tab and paste into a Markdown cell.
Can I copy the equation as an image?
Yes. Copy image puts a PNG of the rendered equation on your clipboard at twice screen resolution, ready for slides, Word or chat. It works in Chrome and Edge; some browsers, Safari among them, refuse to turn rendered math into an image, and the button tells you when yours does.
Is my LaTeX uploaded anywhere?
No. KaTeX runs in your browser tab and nothing you type is sent to a server. The equation and the document you convert are saved in this browser so they are still here next time.
